Mount Calvary will present the Academy Award nominated documentary, A Time for Burning, on Juneteenth, a day that commemorates the freedom of enslaved African Americans in the United States in 1865, two-plus years after the Emancipation Proclamation. Like Juneteenth itself, which highlights the complexities in enforcing emancipation after the Civil War, this film chronicles an ELCA church’s struggle in 1966 to grapple with racial segregation and injustice within its own congregation and community 100 years later.
