As Christians in the northern hemisphere, we begin the liturgical year in deep darkness as the days grow even darker, not lighter. In much of the Bible, darkness is understood as ignorance, punishment, even death. Many of us consider darkness to be that state in which we encounter pain, fear, grief, loneliness – the list goes on. But then we read in Isaiah 45:3
I will give you the treasures of darkness and riches hidden in secret places,
so that you may know that it is I, the Lord, the God of Israel,
who call you by your name.
This Advent, we will explore these treasures of darkness – Courage, Overcoming Fear, and the Presence of God. We will hear from the Old Testament, from the Advent and Christmas stories, and readings from Barbara Brown Taylor’s book Learning to Walk in the Dark.
